Search for Core-Collapse Supernovae using the MiniBooNE Neutrino Detector

We present a search for core-collapse supernovae in the Milky Way galaxy, using the MiniBooNE neutrino detector. No evidence is found for core-collapse supernovae occurring in our Galaxy in the period from December 14, 2004 to July 31, 2008, corresponding to 98% live time for collection. We set a limit on the core-collapse supernova rate out to a distance of 13.4 kpc to be less than 0.69 supernovae per year at 90% C. L.
Long-term X-ray variability of the microquasar system LS 5039/RX J1826.2−1450

We report on the results of the spectral and timing analysis of a BeppoSAX observation of the microquasar system LS 5039/RX J1826.2-1450. The source was found in a low-flux state with Fx(1-10 keV)= 4.7 x 10^{-12} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1}, which represents almost one order of magnitude lower than a previous RXTE observation 2.5 years before. The 0.1--10 keV spectrum is described by an absorbed power-law continuum with photon-number spectral index Gamma=1.8+-0.2 and hydrogen column density of NH=1.0^{+0.4}_{-0.3} x 10^{22} cm^{-2}. The cool Galactic R Coronae Borealis variable DY Persei

Results of first CCD photometry during the recent deep light decline, and high-resolution spectroscopy, are presented for DY Persei. The spectra show variable blueshifted features in the sodium D lines. The C lines are strong whereas neutron- capture elements are not enhanced. The isotopic 13 CN(2, 0) lines relative to 12 CN are of similar strength with those for the carbon star U Hya. All these confirm the RCB nature of DY Per and the existence of ejected clouds. At least two clouds are revealed at −197.3 and −143.0 km s −1 . A star was detected about 0. 4t o the west and 2 . 5 to the north from DY Per. A 60-night campaign on dwarf novae. - I. Photometric variability of SU UMa and YZ Cnc

A 60-night campaign on SU UMa, YZ Cnc and some secondary targets was carried out during 1988 December and 1989 January at the Observatorio del Roque de Los Muchachos (the 1988 International Time Project). The aim was to study the behaviour of these dwarf novae through their outburst cycle. Here we present the overall light curves of the main targets, SU UMa and YZ Cnc, which show that the optical fluxes continue to decrease after the end of the outburst. For YZ Cnc we find that, during quiescence, orbital variability is present, which may be interpreted as modulation caused by the bright-spot region. Hβ photometry for UVBY standard stars

From 1984 to 1986 the authors made several observational campaigns at Calar Alto and La Palma Observatories using the uvby and β photometric systems to monitor a selected sample of late-type variable stars. In this paper they present the β values for 38 uvby standard stars to contribute to the uvby-β calibration works on late-type stars. In the final discussion, the β computed values are plotted against the Stroemgren b-y, m_(1), and c_(1) indices.
Long-term variability of the Be/X-ray binary A 0535+26 -- I. Optical and UV spectroscopy

The results of a 7-yr optical and UV spectroscopic study of the high-mass X-ray binary A 0535+26 are presented. It was found that throughout the period of the observations the line profile of Hα showed considerable variability. A correlation between the equivalent width of Hα and both V-band magnitude and (B−V) colour excess was observed, albeit with considerable scatter present in the data set. A giant X-ray flare in early 1994 was accompanied by a fading in optical and infrared photometric bands, and a reduction in the equivalent width of Hα. We perform a smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) three-dimensional simulation of the outburst phase of the accretion disc of a typical SS Cyg-like dwarf nova in the framework of the mass transfer burst model (MTBM), where we assume that the active phase is triggered by a sudden increase in the accretion rate due to some instability in the secondary's atmosphere. The evolution of the accretion disc is followed for a single orbital period, starting from the initial quiescent disc configuration obtained by us in a previous paper. X-RAY SPECTROSCOPIC DIAGNOSIS OF A WIND-COLLIMATED BLAST WAVE AND METAL-RICH EJECTA FROM THE 2006 EXPLOSION OF RS OPHIUCHI

Chandra HETG observations of RS Ophiuchi at day 13.9 of the 2006 outburst reveal a rich spectrum of emission lines from abundant ions formed over a wide temperature range (∼ 3 × 10 6 to 60 × 10 6 K) indicative of shock heating of the circumstellar medium by the expanding blast wave. Lines are asymmetric and strongly broadened (v ∼ 2400 km s −1 at zero intensity). Using simple analytical model profiles, we show how the lines are shaped by differential absorption in the red giant wind and explosion ejecta, and that shock heating to multimillion degree temperatures appears to have occurred preferentially in the direction perpendicular to the line of sight. A rapid H? change in X Persei

A trend of decreasing Hα emission over a period of thirty minutes is apparent in a series of spectra of X Persei taken on 31 December, 1987. This change appears to be astrophysical in origin and it indicates an anomalous state for X Persei that may be linked to its transition from a Be star to a normal B star, which occurred sometime between March 1988 and November 1990.
Gaia-ESO Survey: H{alpha} emission stars catalogue

We discuss the properties of H{alpha} emission stars across the sample of 22035 spectra from the Gaia-ESO Survey internal data release, observed with the GIRAFFE instrument and largely belonging to stars in young open clusters. Automated fits using two independent Gaussian profiles and a third component accounting for the nebular emission allow us to discern distinct morphological types of H{alpha} line profiles with the introduction of a simplified classification scheme. Altogether we find 3765 stars with intrinsic emission and sort their spectra into eight distinct morphological categories: single component emission, emission blend, sharp emission peaks, double emission, P-Cygni, inverted…
